Common Threads – Woven through Community

Look down at the clothes you are wearing today.

Where have they come from? Who made them?

Do you know what they are made of?

Synthetic fibres from clothing impact our ecosystem in a range of ways.

“The average global annual consumption of textiles has doubled from 7 to 13 kg per person in two decades – and in Australia is twice that at 27kgs per person – and the majority of new clothing is now made from synthetic fibres derived from petroleum.” – Jane Milburn

This workshop aims to provide space for an informed discussion into the impact that clothing production has on our world. You’ll learn about the pros and cons of both man-made and natural fibres, and what we can all do to buy mindfully and demand long-lasting change in the fashion industry.

Bring along your open mind, sense of humour, great expansive questions and a thirst for this dynamic conversation. You will share a nourishing light supper with the group during the evening and it’s a great opportunity to meet new friends who have a Common Thread.

Morgan Kay is a multi-disciplined artist who grew up in the Perth Hills. She has been working with textiles for many years, and creates quirky, one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art, costumes, and fancy clothing. Sustainable fashion is a passion of hers, and this is reflected in her fascination and enthusiasm for recycling, up-cycling, and re-purposing fabric.

Morgan will be running workshops over the course of the month aimed at informing the community about the ecological impact of fast fashion products and what we can all do to effect change within the global fashion industry.

Common Threads – Woven through Community is a month long community engagement project proudly brought to the Perth Hills following on from the world Fashion Revolution week in late April.

This exhibition includes topics of integrating sustainability, creativity, and traditional hand-crafted wisdom of the ages. These events are designed for you to leave feeling deeply inspired to become part of a brand new impulse of considerable change.
