Common Threads – Woven through Community
HANDS ON WORKSHOP
Did you know this interesting fact about how felt originated? One commonly told story is that during the Middle Ages, men lined their sandals with wool for comfort. Over time, the fibres in the wool became interlocked and felted as a result of the moisture, warmth and recurring pressure from being walked on.
Have you ever wanted to learn this ancient craft, but perhaps by making something other than liners for sandals??!!
A great place to start learning this skill is by creating a lovely little felt pot which will look absolutely stunning sitting on your favourite piece of furniture or window ledge. It’s a wonderful way to learn the ancient art of felting and you will walk away with a completed piece which will amaze you … and your family and friends.
This is a fun and intimate workshop with a maximum of 8 participants where you will receive focused attention to learn the skills required to felt beautiful little pieces with plenty of colour choices available.
By layering silk threads, fine wool yarns and colourful gauze into gorgeous patterns, you will find your creative flow and connect to your heart through the process of felting.
Layer on the wool and after smoothing out your unique piece and working on it, you finally get to see your patterns unveiled in your very own lovely little felt pot!
It is a lovely unfolding and a truly nourishing workshop.
Kim Gordon, who lives locally in the Perth Hills, first learned to felt about 10 years ago and fell in love with it. Ever since she was a young girl she loved the fibres of different fabrics which she reflects may have come from her mother and grandmother teaching her how to knit and crochet using many different wools and cotton.
Over the years Kim has developed a love for natural fabrics and has mostly felted as a much-loved interest. Kim has also participated in many workshops with well-known Australian and International felters giving her a variety of skills to share.
Kim has been part of the Common Threads Woven Through Community team since its inception in 2018.
Her motto for felting is ‘From Fibre to Fabulous’… “To start with tiny and delicate fibres and watch them turn into a strong and durable piece of fabric or a delicate art work is amazing” says Kim.
Common Threads Woven through Community is a week-long community engagement project proudly brought to the Perth Hills.
This exhibition includes topics of integrating sustainability, creativity, and traditional hand-crafted wisdom of the ages. These events are designed for you to leave feeling deeply inspired to become part of a continuing impulse of considerable change.

As a hands-on workshops, it is recommended you wear something comfortable and don’t mind getting a little bit wet.
