Hands On Sewing Machine Workshop
HANDS ON WORKSHOP
Are you the once-proud owner of a sewing machine which is now gathering dust in your spare room or tucked away at the back of a cupboard?
Did you have plans to design and sew clothes for yourself and your family?
Did you pick up the instruction manual, find the on switch, thread the needle and got no further?
Well, this is the perfect time to START AGAIN! Dust off your sewing machine, bundle up any fabrics you have lying around and re-ignite that dream to sew, recycle, upcycle and create something beautiful and unique just for you.
This three-week series of workshops is for the absolute beginner, the novice who has lost confidence or the aspiring seamstress who last changed a presser foot in high school! If you haven’t got a sewing machine, there will be a few available for hire.
The workshops will be held on:
- Tuesday 24th July
- Tuesday 31st July
- Tuesday 14th August
Join Julie Livingstone who will introduce you or re-introduce you to your sewing machine and teach you all the skills you will need to produce something useful. Perfect timing with the banning of plastic shopping bags to make a lightweight shopping bag, a zippered bag to put them in when not being used and a small recycled denim bag with either a cross body strap or wrist strap.
Over the last few years Julie has developed an interest in recycling and upcycling pre-loved fabrics and garments, driven largely by an aversion to fast fashion and its environmental impact. Although Julie loves the character of old fabrics and the stories some pre-loved garments might have to tell, she’s not adverse to buying gorgeous new fabrics now and again!
Julie has taught workshops for the Australian Sewing Guild and frequently attends the Guild conventions in the Eastern States to keep up to date with the latest trends. She has had several prize-winning entries with her upcycled pieces in the “Castaway to Couture” contest run by the Australian Sewing Guild over the last few years.
We are delighted to have Julie join us at The Sound Temple to share her vast knowledge of sewing, sewing machines and how to recycle, upcycle and create your own unique works of art. These workshops follow on from our Common Threads – Woven through Community Projects and support our commitment to community engagement around the topic of sustainable fashion.
